PJ Morton Conveys Determination With 'Sticking To My Guns'

We're only halfway through the year and already PJ Morton has accomplished more than most of us will come December. As a member of Maroon 5, he's spent the past few months touring the world (with several more dates scheduled throughout the year). Despite this hectic schedule, he somehow managed to move back to his hometown of New Orleans, launch a record label (which signed Jcksn Ave and JoJo Martin), plus release his Bounce & Soul mixtape and accompanying video for "I Need Your Love" featuring 5th Ward Weebie. On top of that, he's also gearing up for a summer tour with PJ Morton Trio. Understandably, a brand spanking new maxi-single is the last thing we were expecting from the busy musician. But PJ is a man on mission as evidenced with the release of "Sticking To My Guns."

If you like your daily dose of motivation with a shot of funk on the side look no further, your fix is right here. With an acoustic intro reminiscent of Eric Clapton's guitar in "Change the World," we were expecting a little country-pop/blues ditty at first. But Morton switches gears and takes us to church (courtesy of a sermon snippet) before segueing into a rollicking groove with layered harmonies and a rhythm section that won't quit. The song's theme is an empowering mix of self-realization ("My own mind was my greatest contender."), drive ("'Cause I got so much more to do; I pray I'm here to see it through.") and determination ("I'm sticking to my guns until my work is done."). The feel-good tune ends (a little too soon if you ask us) with a Stevie Wonder-esque jam session further brightened by an electrifying guitar solo.

We'll have to wait until July 1st for the full maxi-single (which may contain remixed versions of "Sticking To My Guns," additional new songs, or both), but until then hit the play button below and stay tuned for the song's video, which recently wrapped shooting in New Orleans. Scroll down to see the PJ Morton Trio tour schedule (including several dates with SoulBounce fave Emily King) and get your tickets before they're gone.
