Muhsinah started 2016 with the lofty goal of releasing an EP for each month of the year. She got off to a very healthy start, delivering January, February and March right on schedule. However, last month came and went without anything coming from Muhsinah's direction. Given the way April ended, however, who could blame the singer/songwriter/producer for being knocked off track by a hair? As the saying goes, better late than never. It may be the merry month of May, but Muhsinah's April is right on time.
As with the other EPs, she keeps it short and sweet on April, limiting the tracklist to three songs, "Thankful," "Habibi (Interlude)" and "Lover." "Thankful" finds her giving thanks to the man upstairs for meeting the one. It's synth-heavy, easy-going groove will definitely put a smile on your face as the cheerful mood of the track is without a doubt infectious. The brief "Habibi" is a brisk workout, with a pulsing beat in which she details her longing for a lover who's out of reach. Last, and most certainly not least, is "Lover," a rock-tinged joint with a slightly Prince-like feel, keeping things pretty interesting as Musinah pours out her heart while trying to convince a lover to stay for the long haul.
Late or not, April definitely delivers. With four EPs down and eight more to go before the year is out, we only hope that Muhsinah can keep up with the quality output she's been giving us thus far.
