Raheem DeVaughn's new single “Come Together” is the perfect after Valentine's Day track for all the lovers out there to keep the fires lit. The self-proclaimed Love King is well known for giving us the soundtracks to our love lives with his heart palpating falsetto and NSFW lyrics. Most recently, he brought the gift of his music to fans around the country while on the The Love 'N Soul Experience Tour with Leela James and V. Bozeman. Since the end of the tour in November, DeVaughn was musically quiet until dropping a remix of his 2015 single “Black Ice Cream.” While SoulBounce loved the remix, we were wondering when and if he was going to come out with any new material. “Come Together” was his Valentine's Day present to all of his fans, a sure indicator that the singer is back and in the studio.
Moses Stone produced the track and turned what would otherwise be a traditional R&B banger into a fully modern fusion of R&B and trap. The 808's, the hi-hats and the crisp snare are all traditional trap elements, but the silkiness of the synths add that essential sexiness that DeVaughn is so well known for. Those synths along with Raheem's voice, harmonies and occasional falsetto turn the underlying trap beat into a sound that is entirely new but also entirely DeVaughn. Of course, he's sensually singing to a lover about their night ahead filled with “roses red.” He promises to love “all your worries away” and goes on to sing about the beauty of what happens "when me and you come together.” The double meaning of the lines of the chorus aren't lost on us, and they add that essential DeVaughn wordplay to the track.
Raheem DeVaughn's last comprehensive musical work was Love Sex Passion, which dropped last February. The release of “Come Together” means the singer is back at work, which is a good sign for those of us praying for a new EP or LP to drop soon. While we wait to see the Love King's next musical move, listen to “Come Together” below and enjoy this President's Day with your boo of choice.
