Last spring, Hans Island got our attention with their smooth, seductive introduction "Let Me Be," unveiling a surprise collaboration between Danish singer/songwriter Marie Dahlstrøm and Canadian producer Mawhs. Since then, they've continued to impress us with follow-ups "Start Over" (which we were privileged to premiere) and "I'm Yours." Now they're starting off the new year with an official release date for their Hans Island EP (January 29th) along with brand new track "Break Free" to hold us over until then.

Upon first listen, it's evident that this is unlike anything we've heard from the duo in the past. For starters, the tune is immediately set off by downbeat percussion that seriously thumps – a slight shift in the undercurrent from the breezy, mellow vibes of previous offerings. The song's motivational theme also marks a departure from their earlier releases which dealt with love and relationships. But even with these creative distinctions, one thing remains the same: Mawhs and Dahlstrøm's aural chemistry. Mawhs' complex production delivers an ambrosial arrangement of hazy synth, beats and sonic blips that complement the graceful sophistication of Marie's vocals.

The singer recently expounded (via NYLON) that the song is about "reaching for the things you want to achieve in life and not being intimidated by a challenge. It's also about finding meaning where you are." Whether you're suffering from snowstorm blues or just need a little inspiration to help you reach your goals in 2016, this track is the perfect pick-me-up. Check it out below, and get ready to grab a copy of the long-awaited eponymous debut due out this Friday. As if that weren't exciting enough, Ms. Dahlstrøm has also hinted that she'll be dropping a new solo single in early February. We can't wait!
