After spoiling us earlier this year with a new remix every two weeks, ENTRSTELLAR seemingly initiated Ghost Protocol on their SoundCloud page and vanished without a trace. OK, maybe we're being a bit dramatic. The truth of the matter is, we know both brandon* and Jay Ellyiot have been quite busy working on a myriad of projects. And yes, they did drop a few original gems through their label, Roseville Music Group. But still, we missed their unique remixes.
So imagine our delight when they finally announced the release date for anticipated debut EP Grand Theft Audio (October 12th to be exact). As if that wasn't satisfactory enough, they've now squashed our complaints completely with a killer album preview -- reworking our fam Teedra Moses' "Be Your Girl" from her 2004 debut Complex Simplicity. Draped in smooth synths and thick beats, the mid-tempo jam was a flirtatious overture that got us forever hooked on Teedra's honeyed vocals.
Kaytranada gave us his take on the track a few years ago, transforming it into club-ready banger. ENTRSTELLAR takes a different approach, relaxing the tempo just a tad to create a slinky, mellow groove. Yet even at a slower pace, it still hits thanks to smoldering, persistent beats and a seamless inclusion of The Notorious B.I.G.'s "Juicy" (by way of Mtume's "Juicy Fruit," of course). The shimmering production enhances our appreciation of Teedra's voice, casting it in a vibrant new light that guarantees repeated plays. Good thing the beat wizards are giving it away for free.
Listen below, keep scrolling for a visual trip down memory lane and get ready to download your copy of Grand Theft Audio when it drops next week. In the meantime, their earlier "missing" remixes can be found on Bandcamp. And if you're jonesing for more Teedra, grab Cognac and Conversation wherever good music is sold.
