Emerging singer/songwriter Andra Day is an arbiter of jazzy, rock-infused vintage soul, delivering earnest lyrics with the sagacity of someone twice her age. No wonder her debut Cheers To the Fall has been praised by critics and fans alike. Unapologetically retro and oozing with brassy charm, it's hard not to become mesmerized when listening to her incredible voice. But the captivation takes even greater hold when seeing her perform live.

Not long ago, she landed in the Nation's Capital to pay a visit to NPR Music for their Tiny Desk Concert series. All Songs Considered host Bob Boilen makes a point to see an artist perform live before he books them for a Tiny Desk segment. But in the case of Ms. Day, he says "I decided to break my rule, sight unseen." After viewing this performance, we think it's pretty safe to say that he made a good call.

Accompanied by a talented quartet of musicians -- Charles Jones (keys, vocals), Shay Godwin (drums, vocals), Nando Raio (bass), Dave Wood (guitar) -- Andra launched into the three-song set with lead single, "Forever Mine." Digging into her bluesy lower register, she confidently saunters through the tune occasionally embellishing with jazzy scats. Up next is the inspirational ballad "Rise Up," which engages her massive falsetto and allows her voice to soar. Closing out the set with "Gold," the songstress begs the crowd not to judge the candid lyrics as she croons about the mistakes of a past relationship. Topped off with her gracious demeanor, warm smile and sweet laugh the performance is sure to convince you to find out when she'll be coming to a city near you. Don't worry, we've got you covered.
