Kwabs
Seen & Heard at Mojo Club in Hamburg, Germany

I was really excited about finally getting to the Mojo Club. It's known to have one of the best sound systems in Germany, and the entrance to the club is a set of doors that come up out of the ground revealing staircases leading you down to the venue. Cool, right? The place was super-packed when I arrived and I had to wait for my friend, who was at least seven months pregnant at the time, to arrive. She agreed to be my photographer for the night and was so amazing for doing me that favor. (She has photographed for the United Nations all over the world and multiple publications. Yeah, she's kind of a big deal.) We slowly made our way up to the front of the stage just in time for the start of the show.

Emerging majestically from a smokey haze in a long, black trench, Kwabs began to sing with such an intense focus on the job at hand: to transport the audience through his sensual, mysterious musical kingdom. His voice, warm yet powerful as steel, was vaguely reminiscent of a Donny Hathaway in as much as it courses through your soul. You don't just casually listen to a voice like his, it affects you, it moves you. As soon as the epic tune "Walk" started, the audience went crazy. For me, the standout performance of the show was "Last Stand." His drummer played in a really tribal, almost cinematic style I've been hearing a lot in Europe. I absolutely loved it. This was a fantastic show from an artist who I think we will one day all call a "legend."
