With compelling films like The Josephine Baker Story and Introducing Dorothy Dandridge, HBO Films is no stranger to biopics about audacious Black women who broke barriers in the entertainment industry and paved the way for future generations. On May 16th, Bessie will join this sparse exclusive roster when it premieres, so the cable network has released a preview to whet our appetites. We've been anticipating the film's debut since the news first broke around this time last year, so excitement is high around SBHQ now that we actually have an official trailer and premiere date.

Headlined by multi-faceted Academy Award nominee Dana Owens (better known as Queen Latifah) and directed by Dee Rees (Pariah), the film delves into the personal and professional lives of legendary blues singer Bessie Smith. Dubbed "The Empress of the Blues," Smith rose to stardom in the 1920s, becoming one of the most successful and critically-acclaimed entertainers of her time.

The film doesn't side-step, but instead takes a direct approach when it comes to all aspects of Bessie's life. And though her troubled childhood, bisexuality, brazen attitude, charismatic persona and alcoholism will be on display, her talent is the main attraction. Queen Latifah is engaging as Smith, emotionally drawing us into the narrative with her sincere portrayal and electrifying rendition of "Preachin' the Blues." Joining Queen (who also serves as executive producer) on screen will be a talented ensemble of actors, including Michael K. Williams, Mo'Nique, Tika Sumpter, Mike Epps, Khandi Alexander, Tory Kittles and Charles S. Dutton.
