Lili K. & The Jeff Gibbs Quartet 'Latch' Onto Disclosure

While Lili K.'s most recent EP, My Favorite Things, explored the songbooks of Duke Ellington and George Gershwin, the Chi-Town chanteuse goes for something more contemporary this time around as she puts a jazzy spin on the Disclosure and Sam Smith hit single, "Latch." For this refix, Lili K. recruits the Jeff Gibbs Quartet as her backup band and they in turn frame the track into a sprawling six-minute meditation, topping it off with wriggling saxophone solos and Lili K.'s energizing scats for extra garnish. As there have been many covers already dismantling and reassembling the runaway hit into various moods, Lili K. and the Jeff Gibbs Quartet offer something on the lighter side, but you can't deny that even in its quiet thunder it still snaps, crackles and pops.

"Latch" might be Lili K.'s last foray into jazz for some time, as it's rumored that her upcoming new album, Ruby, will take a detour into more throwback R&B and soul sounds. We'll have a while to wait though, as the album won't be arriving until spring of next year, but you can bet when the first buds begin to sprout, SB will keep you in the know of what is to come from the Lili K. camp. In the meantime, listen to Lili and the Jeff Gibbs Quartet's take on "Latch" and, if you so choose, you can also grab a free download.
