Rico Love must not have been as content with Disclosure's "Latch" as many of the rest of us. That's because the singer-songwriter-sometimes rapper has remixed the Sam Smith-featuring tune, but how does it hold up to the original?
Well, the electronic-based track delves much deeper into an R&B sound on "Latch (#TTLO Remix)," though some moments within the melody step lightly into grimier hip-hop territory. It's a noticeable juxtaposition to be sure, especially when Smith's vocals croon along.
Further changing up what we are used to with this record are the additional lyrics. "Shawty, I wonder if we can go / Paint the town like Van Gogh," goes one particularly clever part of Rico's flow, followed shortly by, "And I'm trapped in your attraction / Hope you latching onto me."
Reworking tracks can be a delicate balance of respecting the original and making sure it's different enough to earn the "remix" distinction. With this version, a little bit of the former and a lot of the latter can be heard, but it doesn't exactly excite or innovate this jam.
