"Won't Get Nowhere" is a slow-simmering ballad that immediately called to mind D'Angelo or Prince, thanks to Gregory's enviable falsetto and the type of fuzzy guitar that reigned supreme during the Purple Rain era. Meanwhile, "EYLYL," an acronym for "Everything You Love You Lose," is on more of a classic rock vibe that while still baring traces of Prince, would be easily at home on a Lenny Kravitz album. The song, which finds Gregory grieving over a lost love as he sings "Cuz I can say that that girl was my baby/Hope you got to heaven safely."
It's that type of pensive lyricism and timeless musicianship that makes Gregory an artist worth watching. With only four songs, he manages to pack in a lifetime of infectious, feel-good sounds that many could only wish they could capture in an entire album. With his nostalgic approach to music, it only makes sense that the blueprint for his Movement Records lies in the labels of yesteryear such as Stax and Motown. "We feel that the sort of records we love that inspired us all to become musicians and artists don't currently have a vehicle like they used to," he explains. "We want to create that vehicle through Movement Records."
And with a debut such as this, we have no doubt that Christian Gregory is certainly up for the task.
