As the summer continues, we’ve been on the hunt for our next music festival in the Washington Metropolitan area. Enter the 2014 Summer Spirit Festival, which takes place this Saturday, August 2nd, at the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, MD. In its ninth year, the festival promises an entertaining roster of your favorite soul, hip-hop and go-go acts. Laced with some serious girl power, this year’s festival features some heavy hitters; Lauryn Hill, Janelle Monáe and Meshell Ndegeocello will each bring their own brand of feminine prowess to the lineup. Holding it down for the fellas will be the DMV’s own Raheem DeVaughn, Talib Kweli, George Tandy, Jr., RDGLDGRN and Roman Gianarthur. It wouldn’t be the Summer Spirit Festival without a heavy dose of some homegrown go-go, which will be provided this year by Junkyard Band and Backyard Band.
It looks like the festival is making up for D’Angelo‘s disappearance last year (#neverforget) with a cadre of artists that appeal to the masses. Whether you’re looking for soul, R&B, hip-hop, go-go or alternative sounds, you can get it all in one place at SSF, which also features arts and crafts, vendors, food and DJ sets by DJ Quicksilva. If this lineup moves your spirit, you can get your tickets at the Merriweather Post Pavilion box office or on TicketFly or get more information from the event producers CD Enterprises.
