If you’re a fan of R&B ballads, you’ve no doubt heard your fair share of apology songs. You know, the “I’m sorry...baby, baby, pleeeease!” variety. It’s a road well-traveled by male R&B singers, and Brooklyn-bred newcomer Denzel White is ready to hit the ground running with “Better Than the Last Time,” the first single from his upcoming project, The Prequel.

Produced by Roshan “Lehkz” Cameron (aka The Vamp), the track eschews the usual instrumental intro, opting instead for the sounds of a rain storm. Is the storm a metaphor for the rocky relationship, or is he simply trying to paint a mental picture of how distraught he is over losing his lady? Either way, Denzel has our attention as he tenderly pleads, “I could ease your mind, just give me a little bit of your time.” As the song continues, we get some hints about what went wrong from “her” perspective. But being that this is an apology song, the main focus here is the singer’s earnest attempt to make her forget about “all the s**t in the past, and move forward.” Ironically, he never gives an actual apology (look, some of us need to hear those magic words), but at least it’s implied. Beyond all of that, though, Mr. White can sing, and has given us a worthwhile preview of what to expect on The Prequel.
