It's Easy As 'A-B-C' For Janelle Monáe At BET Honors 2014

janelle-monae-bet-honors-2014 With an all-female troupe of background dancers and a full-fledged band, Janelle Monáe didn't half-step when evoking the spirit of the Jackson 5 during this year's BET Honors. And saying that Monáe evoked the spirit of the Jackson 5 is an understatement in itself as Monáe went note-for-note and step-for-step on J5 classics 1969's "I Want You Back" and 1970's "ABC" that if you blinked, you might have figured a fringed jacketed baby Michael Jackson had been reincarnated on the stage somehow. Even honoree of the night and founder of Motown Records Berry Gordy couldn't help but crack a smile and clap along to the reimagining of what was his biggest musical find with Monáe letting out some familiar fancy footwork. It's really no shock that Monáe would turn it out and go for an on-par performance, as she has strutted on J5 ground before with her recent The Electric Lady project possessing shades of the Jackson brothers right down to a remake of none other than "I Want You Back." Yet, to see her light up the stage with these sunny soul classics is a treat in itself as much as a poignant tribute to an era gone by.
