Take A ‘Ride’ With SLK

There is no doubt that “alt” or “indie” R&B is the genre du jour, with both established artists and newcomers choosing to combine soulful vocals with edgy, electronic, often dark soundscapes. London-based SLK (pronounced “Silk”) is the latest in a very long line of artists dipping their toes in these waters but few have managed to come straight out the gate with a song as aurally arresting as “Ride.” All the ingredients are here: deep, bassy kicks, undulating synths, intimate lyrics and a strong but restrained vocal. However, the combination on display here still manages to stand apart from the pack thanks to spot on production courtesy of Embody and SLK’s poised and controlled delivery. Whilst comparisons to fellow newcomers Banks and Rosie Lowe are inevitable, we definitely feel there is room for another soulful, sultry songstress and we can’t wait to hear what SLK’s upcoming EP will sound like.
