One-time YouTube sensation and current background singer for Ms. Erykah Badu herself, Durand Bernarr certainly knows a thing or two about come-ups. And now, after giving us a little taste of his EP Anxiety., the talent is serving up the full seven-track course for us to enjoy. Completely written and arranged by Durand himself and produced by collaborator Kerem Akdag, the set finds Durand exploring '80s and early '90s R&B textures while giving his own unique spin with unconventional lyrics and approaches. If some of the song titles (which include "Urethra" and "Tainted Briefs") don't grab your attention, then the amazing vocals and rich, textured harmonies that he puts on full display here definitely will. As well, the lyrics here are definitely cause for consideration. At times both sexually and emotionally charged, Durand weaves provocative and original tales about love that seem utterly bizarre yet totally relatable. How he manages to pull off such a feat is beyond this writer, but I applaud him for it. If you're already fan of Durand, then this will be right up your alley. And if you happen to be a newcomer to this talent, then this will be a great introduction. Anxiety. is available now via Durand's Bandcamp page.
