Daniel Crawford Gives Us Very Pleasant 'Side Effects'

Last week, we brought a preview of jazz man Daniel Crawford's jazz mixtape Side Effects with his cover of The Isley Brothers' "Summer Breeze." Today, Mr. Crawford releases the full project for your listening pleasure. In addition to "Summer Breeze," the set offers covers and alternate takes on some soul classics as well as some of Daniel's own material. But the best moment of the mixtape happens when he teams with chanteuse Kyra Simone to cover Prince and Apollonia's duet from Purple Rain "Take Me With U." Daniel and Kyra's mellowed take on the song is beautifully subdued with their vocals (yes, that's Daniel playing Prince to Kyra's Apollonia) mixing quite nicely. While "Take Me With U" is definitely the set's crown jewel, it's by no means the only great moment here, as he offers up solid and inventive covers of "I Wanna Be Where You Are," "Brown Sugar," "Find My Way" and a jazzy remix of Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell's "Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing." The Side Effects mixtape is available now via Daniel's Bandcamp page on a pay-what-you-like basis (which means it's free.99 folks). Press play below to stream it in its entirety and be sure to download your copy and catch what this talented man is throwing in your direction.
