Justin Timberlake's 'TKO' Isn't Exactly A Knock Out

Fresh off winning his Video Vanguard Award at this year's MTV Video Music Awards, Justin Timberlake has released a new single from the second portion of The 20/20 Experience. "TKO" finds JT once again teaming with partner in crime Timbaland to make a song about a pretty young thing who's knocked him out with her love (stop me if you've heard this one before). Besides the usual trope, we are also inundated with a rather lazy showing from Timbo with ad-libs galore ("she kill me with that coochie coo"? Really, Tim?) and very drowsy (and overlong) production. Besides sounding like a faded carbon copy of "Chop Me Up" from JT's best album to date FutureSex LoveSounds, it's ultimately just as tired and dated as everything else he's been trying to force down our throats this year. It's the musical equivalent of a Lean Cuisine: No matter how much you try to heat (or hype) it up, it's all rather bland and cold in the center. But, because it's marketed so well and it's all just so convenient, I'm sure the populace will eat this up and try to pretend that it tastes just like it did when it was first cooked up seven years ago. I, however, am wondering if it's really worth going back to this pot for seconds.
