I wasn't prepared for the smooth yet rhythmic assault that Lulu James' exudes on her newest creation, "Step By Step", but don't count me unhappy about it, as Miss James has delivered a new song for me to worship this summer. Draping her soulful vocals over a crackling bass beat, James takes "Step By Step" to a Donna Summer's "I Feel Love" happy spot as the song transcends on pulsating synths. Interestingly enough, I also hear a little Gwen Guthrie in the bubbling mix recalling the slick house-garage sound that prompts the by-gone era of the Larry Levan's Paradise Garage. Just all around great. James, a Newcastle, England newcomer wasn't on my radar when she released her debut EP, Rope Mirage and single, "Be Safe" last year, but consider that error corrected now. I know it's a little early in the week to be basking in the strobe lights, but if you can't catch a feeling or at least bust out a move to this shimmering track, then you haven't a pulse.
