Billie Holiday's 'Man' Gets Handled On This Toro y Moi Remix

If I only know one thing in this world, it's that there will never be another Billie Holiday. Lady Day and her haunting legacy will outlast all of us. Record label Verve has tipped their hand to give us a listen to Toro y Moi's remix of Billie's "My Man," taken from their upcoming compilation, Verve Remixed: The First Ladies. I've always thought that "My Man" was one of the darkest and somewhat disturbing songs in Billie's repertoire, being that it accurately described the neglect, despair and abuse present in many (if not all) of her relationships. For someone unfamiliar with the song, Toro y Moi's remix takes these elements out. Although this may offend the hardcore fans, hopefully this remix by a great artist will drive people to reach back and discover the original. In addition to Toro's take on Holiday, Verve Remixed: The First Ladies gives us an opportunity to hear more of our favorite jazz and pop legends remixed by today's most prolific producers, featuring songs from Marlena Shaw, Sarah Vaughan and Astrud Gilberto re-imagined by artists such as Kaskade and Bassnectar. Verve Remixed: The First Ladies is out July 16th.
