On April 14th, as part of Philadelphia's International Festival of the Arts, the Robert Glasper Experiment hosted an evening of tribute to Stevie Wonder and his classic LP, Songs In The Key Of Life. Joined by Lalah Hathaway, Eric Roberson and Stokley Williams, they covered some of Stevie's most beloved songs in addition to new material written by Glasper but inspired by Mr. Wonder himself. Luckily, for those of us who missed the show, footage has surfaced online of a number of performances, but my favorite has to be Lalah's stunning cover of "Overjoyed." Delivered with her trademark warmth and soul, Lalah delivers the classic song like only she could, and, with an extended freestyle outro to top the performance off, I find it hard to imagine that there was a better performance that night.
