You'll Really 'Like,' If Not Love, This Gift From Raphael Saadiq

I recently rekindled my love affair with D'wayne Wiggins, Timothy Christian Riley and Raphael Saadiq, collectively known for much of my youth as Tony! Toni! Toné!, after I tracked down a greatest hits compilation that actually had merit. As I blasted easy classics like "Whatever You Want," "(Lay Your Head On My) Pillow," "Slow Wine (Slow Grind)" and jams like "Baby Doll," "My Ex-Girlfriend," and "Feels Good," I began to mourn the dissolution of the original group all over again. After his departure from the group, I continued to follow Raphael Saadiq in his solo endeavors, faithfully purchasing nearly every album even if I didn't totally understand the creative direction at first listen (see 2011's Stone Rollin'). Then DJ Trauma and DJ Mars went and released The Sounds of Saadiq mixtape right here on SoulBounce last week (talk about a trip down memory lane!). Needless to say, I'm always happy to hear new music from the Oakland, California native and was surprised when I learned that I'd missed the opportunity late last year when he dropped "I'm in Like" as a gift to his fans for reaching 100,00 Twitter followers. The easy, breezy and beautiful track is Saadiq's recognition that he's falling for his new lover, but is cautious and wants to take things one day at a time, rather than jumping the gun and proclaiming a love that hasn't fully developed.

If you thought he was so wedded to the retro soul sound that he'd never give us another modern track, think again. In a message on SoundCloud he says,

"This is a song for my friends who want to vibe out to a joint that makes you feel right! No bells, whistles or pretense, just a beautiful song..life in motion. If you wanna sit in the house, ride the Bart, Subway, Metro (or other public transpo), put your headphones on and roll out! That's what I like to do after I write a song...roll out to it. Enjoy."
