Get Some 'Christmas' Cheer From Mariah Carey, Jimmy Fallon & The Roots

Some may refer to Mariah Carey as the Queen of Melisma or "Queen of the Charts", but I prefer Queen of Gettin' Checks. Every year around Thanksgiving, everyone dusts off her holiday anthem, "All I Want For Christmas Is You," to get into the holiday mood. What artist doesn't wish they could write, sing and co-produce a classic like "All I Want For Christmas Is You"? The perennial song basically becomes a Billboard Top 20 hit every year. What people may not realize about Mariah Carey is that she is an incredibly intelligent innovator. Every holiday season she finds a way to recreate the magic of the song with a new edition or collaborator. This year, she may have topped herself with her appearance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. In this version, she sits down (after a grand entrance, of course) with Jimmy Fallon and The Roots to recreate the song using child-size instruments and a chorus of festively-dressed youngsters. What was most surprising to me (other than Tuba Gooding Jr. getting it in on kazoo) is that Mariah is singing live here. As a long time Mariah fan, I can't remember the last time I have seen her sing in such a stripped-down fashion. Even when she does sing live, it usually involves some type of backing track. With a new project debuting in 2013, I am glad to see that she can still bring the goods to the table.
