Every once in awhile, we hear the resounding moo of the cash cow, as collection upon collection of rare, unreleased or just plain tampered with material make their entrance, profiting off the deceased and benefiting for the desperate. Yet, something about the brand new Jackson 5 collection, Come Get It: The Rare Pearls, seems to be a compilation that blocks out those pesky moos and welcomes us to the warm familiar of one of music's most beloved family acts. Dissecting the 32-track, two-disc set, Rare Pearls features a cornucopia of originals and covers originally done by Three Dog Night, Diana Ross and the Supremes and Traffic, that revitalize the Motown spirit and extend the legacy of the Jacksons. If that's not enough, we should be comforted by the fact that these pearls were handled and remastered with tender care by Motown alum Deke Richards who was a part of the long-standing creative team The Corporation noted for penning and producing such J5 classics like "I Want You Back" and "ABC." Richards further assures us that unearthing these gems is to expose the J5 legacy to new and curious ears. We can both agree that that's not a bad thing, as thanks to NPR's unveiling, the footstompin' "If The Shoe Don't Fit" is evidence that music has no expiration date and is always ripe for occasion. As I sip the chai tea, pinky up, while bearing witness to the Jackson family's latest dramas, I'm comforted in the fact that no matter how loud the headlines blare the musical legacy of the family has refrained from being totally tarnished as far as these strands of precious pearls are concerned. Come Get It: The Rare Pearls is available digitally today, the day before what would have been Michael Jackson's 54th birthday, and will be in-store for all in a special box set on September 18th.
