Take A 'Sunwalk' With Modlee & Vlooper

I have a confession to make, SoulBouncers. I am slightly addicted to Bandcamp.com. There, I said it. I lose count of the number of hours I spend each week (usually while at work, but my boss doesn't need to know that) trawling through its pages, searching out new music to fill my ears and my hard drive space. Like any addiction it's the anticipation of the "hit" rather than the "hit" itself that drives me back again and again, only to leave me with an empty feeling at the end of a fruitless search. However, every now and again my obsessiveness pays off and I come across something that makes it all worth it. Yesterday, after clicking through various tags, I somehow ended up on the Soulection label's page, specifically an EP entitled Sunwalk from Canadian beatsmith Vlooper and vocalist Modlee. The fact that the EP's opening track was a cover of Bilal's "All Matter" piqued my interest and so, with a spare few minutes on my hands, I decided to dive in. Modlee's airy vocal, and Vlooper's simple beat put a nice spin on the Bilal cover but it lacks the potency of the original (either the Double Booked version or the Airtight's Revenge version). The original tracks are where this duo really shine, though, with "Doo" sounding like it could be a long lost Erykah Badu track and "Dancin'," contrary to its title, demanding a bout of head-nodding rather than a full-on dance floor workout. Things get a little more spaced out on the title track with both production and vocals recalling something Stacy Epps may have cooked up. At only five tracks in length, the EP is over all too quickly, but like all good things in life, Vlooper and Modlee definitely leave me wanting more.
