Sam Sparro Goes Into 'The Shallow End'

To get the elephant in leopard print leggings out of the way: "Black & Gold" is one of the finest pieces of music ever. It's just brave that Sam Sparro even tried to top it, but his 2008 self-titled debut mightily held up to that challenge as it became one of my favorite releases of that year. So I'm quite estatic to hear the news that Return To Paradise, Sparro's long-anticipated follow-up, will be arriving this spring. With a grocery list of guest musicians and producers on board, Sparro promises that Paradise will be seeped in a "1978-1984" disco-dance glow -- and that descriptor right there is enough to sell me. The first single, the Jesse Rogg and Greg Kurstin produced, "The Shallow End," lives up to that mantra, as it's an extension off of the swiveling funk of his debut, but sharper, taunt, and even more bass-line riddled than before. Its accompanying video gives note of the track's birthplace, which is on the sunny shores of the West Coast, and it's freewheeling vibe mirrors the area well. Though I'm a tad surprised he kind of deserted the house vibe of last year's "You's A Nasty," I'm welcome to anything and all of Sparro just as long as he keeps me in boogie wonderland.
