The Paxtons Take You Down 'Avenue B'

While there are still those fighting the good fight in the mainstream, for me indie is pretty much the only way to go when it comes to hip hop. The Lil Waynes, Drakes, and Young Jeezys of the world just don't do it for me. Sorry. Lucky for me there are artists like The Paxtons who are bringing some independently fresh sounds our way. Deriving their group name from the Chicago street where they grew up, band members Chris and Dave bring their "A" game on their latest mixtape Avenue B. The second installment in their "Avenue" mixtape series (Avenue A was released last September), it contains track after track of unadulterated dopeness, incluiding opener "Lil Bit of Livin'" and the infections "Stay In Love." They wisely choose inventive and unorthodox production and marry it with clever wordplay to build a unique sound that's just plain old refreshing -- especially in a world full of hip-hop soundalikes and rehashes. But you don't have to take my word for it, the duo's offering Avenue B for the low, low price of free via their Bandcamp page. I suggest you do yourself a solid and preview the mixtape here and then cop the download. You'll definitely be glad you did.
