Theophilus London Makes Sure You Remember His 'Name'

Theophilus London is one of the coolest rappers in the game right now. The Brooklyn resident
may not have widespread name recognition just yet, but he's well on his way to making that a reality.
London has an undeniable swagger about him that is hard to shake. He models for Cole Haan and
vigorously rocks a late '80's/early '90's steez but somehow manages to make it fresh. Oh, and
he's a pretty decent lyricist as well. Maybe that's why the hipster set stans for him so; he has a je ne sais
quoi that makes them go wild.
His video for "Last Name London" debuted on MTV, and it follows in the tradition of his other work:
totally fun and totally nostalgic.
Things happen during this video that makes no sense, however -- a one-on-one basketball game, two fly girls from
the future, him spitting rhymes in front of a wall of his own lyrics. There is overhead lighting, smoke billowing, and general rap posturing. He appears to have acquired Tommy Strawn's wardrobe from the set
of Martin and looks like a pointy-shouldered Rakim bopping from side to side, gold chains swinging in
the wind. And while the whole storyline is not immediately clear, all the components work together to
create something incredibly enjoyable. Sometimes the point of a music video isn't necessarily "getting
it," but rather something else -- a sense of fun, or in this case, Theophilus London's name. If you don't
know, now you know.
