Sandra Nkake & Friends Save 'A Place' For Gil Scott-Heron

Although it's almost been a month since we lost Gil Scott-Heron, the tributes to the late icon have continued to pour in. The latest to make its way to the forefront is "A Place For You," the brainchild of Parisian vocalist Sandra Nkake and friends. For the tribute, Nkake enlisted the help of several music producers to add their own flair to the already-awesome original. Producers who hopped on-board include SoulBounce fave Mark de Clive-Lowe and French DJs such as Loik Dury, DJ Oil, Grant Phabao, Vadim Vernay, and Jeff Sharel. The result is a mix of worthy remixes that manage to stretch across several genres and sounds, a move that I'm sure Brother Gil would approve of. At times uptempo and others a slow burn, the mixes are the perfect tribute to a man whose complexities intrigued fans over the span of his 40+ year career. MdCL's version is upbeat and bursting with energy, while DJ Oil's take maintains an almost spooky vibe to it. Meanwhile, Phabao's version infuses it with reggae vibes worthy of any dancehall, whereas Dury reshapes and molds it into a mellowed, nearly-sensual number. What's even better is that the songs are available for free download. And with great music free of charge that honors the life of one of music's icons, it's hard to do anything but win.
