Maimouna Youssef Unleashes Her 'Black Magic'

Ever since I first heard her voice on The Roots' "Don't Feel Right" I have been following Maimouna Youssef closely. I scoured the web far and wide to get my hands on her song "Gypsy Woman," and I've been eager for her to drop a full project for some time, so when I checked my email this morning I was in for a very pleasant surprise. Maimouna has released a six-track (4 if you discount the intro/outro) EP entitled Black Magic Woman, which really shows off her breadth as an artist. "You Ain't Hard" and "Free As A Bird" display her hip-hop roots, whereas "Why You Ain't Signed" shows off her spoken word skills, however it's the rootsy, deep south blues of the title track that stands out as you imagine Maimouna performing it in some smokey, dimly lit, backwater juke joint. The full EP can be purchased via Bandcamp.
