Take Some 'TIME' To See That Urban Artists Dominated 2010

Tis the season for year-end wrap-ups and "best of" lists. Giving one of the more comprehensive compilations I've seen so far, TIME has released its "Top 10 Everything of 2010" list, with some pretty interesting categories. Covering everything from Top 10 Buzzwords ("Vuvuzelas") to Top 10 Comebacks (Conan O'Brien) and Top 10 Movies (Toy Story 3), the list is a broad look at everything that dominated headlines this year. SoulBounce editor ill Mami's beloved purple deity, Prince, even made the Top 10 Fashion Statements list.

The South African World Cup and Haiti's Earthquake made the list, along with a handful of stories I hadn't heard about. A Japanese journalist held captive in Afghanistan was freed after posting his exact location on Twitter. An American woman returned a Russian child she had adopted back to the orphanage. And...there are now artificial ovaries. Oh yeah.

Also interesting are the Top 10 Album and Top 10 Songs list. These lists speak directly to the commercial power of urban artists in 2010. Their commercial and radio domination is unavoidable and is reflected on many of the lists. A few SoulBounce faves were recognized by TIME, thankfully. The two lists are heavy with hip hop and R&B releases. Mostly no-brainers here, as far as mainstream-recognized artists go. Cee-Lo's pop smash "F--k You," Janelle Monae's anthem "Tightrope," Drake's "Find Your Love" and, an unexpected favorite of mine, Kanye West's "Power" all made their way onto the Top 10 Songs list. Kanye's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, as well as the latest albums by Drake and Big Boi also got some shine on the top albums list. Though I haven't heard of many of the artists or albums mentioned, the collections seem pretty accurate, considering the publication who produced the roundup. Surprisingly, no Bruno Mars here, though. Check out the full Top 10 Albums and Top 10 Songs lists below.
