Macy Gray's New Vid Is A 'Beauty'

Though her last album, Big, came out in 2007, Macy Gray's most memorable appearances as of late for me have been her acting roles in fun flicks such as the 2006 big-screen movie Idlewild with Andre Benjamin, Paula Patton and Big Boi and the HBO movie Lackawanna Blues with Mos Def and Terrence Howard that came out the year before. Gray, although seemingly typecast as the loud, drunken troublemaker in both movies, was such fun to watch and seemed primed to do a Will Smith--making acting the full-time gig over music. But, she is back, proving that her musical ambitions are alive and well. Her first single, "Beauty in the World," from her upcoming CD, The Sellout, is a feel-good ditty that is the perfect vehicle to introduce her sound and style to new fans while alerting her old ones that the Queen of Quirk is here to stay. Macy looks fresh-faced and full of great energy as she appears in this video that she says was inspired by her teen daughter who she heard laughing in another room one day. "I was having a really
bad day and I
heard my daughter just cracking up in the next room," Macy recalls.
"She has this really great laugh and I didn't even know what she was
laughing at. I thought 'at least she's happy.' And I felt
at least I hadn't failed there, because my daughter's
happy."
While "Beauty" started out as a David Guetta-style
house track, Macy switched it into a more breezy, peace-and-love anthem to fit more with her own style and music preference. "You get bombarded with opinion and
expectations and what other people want and you forget what you do
well," she says. "That song is what I do
well."
And I agree. I think you'll like this one.
