Tinashe & Young Thug Offer Up 'Party Favors'

Tinashe promised her new era would come soon with her upcoming sophomore album Joyride, and she's wasting no time ushering it in. The R&B not-so-newcomer has dropped the set's first single, "Party Favors," and roped in rapper Young Thug on the assist.

The track is a hazy, drugged up number which finds Tinashe returning to her pre-major label experimentation. A woozy synthesizer loop plays over stuttering programmed drums to set the majority of the mood while Tinashe delivers a whispery vocal. Like many of the singer's songs, this one takes place in the club, with the songstress playing aggressor as she pushes up on a guy who's caught her eye. While the guy might be looking at some of the other girls, Tinashe lets him know that no one's bringing to the table what she's got, and it's just for him. With such a dazed and confused backdrop, it would seem that Young Thug is the perfect rapper for the track, as his Auto-Tuned, nonsensical vocal fits right in with the party. Unfortunately, that's not a good thing.

Though the experimental sparse arrangement fits in with Tinashe's previously established aesthetic, here, it falls short and does little to differentiate this from anything on the "2 On" singer's first album. We can only hope that Joyride will have more in store than the same old same old or it might be one ride that we decide to pass on.
