After an 11-year hiatus, MC Lyte is ready to step up to the mic again and will be releasing her first studio album later this year. On the first single, "Dear John," Lyte is joined by fellow hip -hop veteran Common and 10Beats. The track is a hopeful open letter to young Black men asking them to continue to persevere and not to fall victim to the chaos of this unjust world that surrounds them. Produced by Loudbox, the song has a classic hip-hop vibe with Lyte and Common taking turns on the mic to share wisdom and inspiration with young men.

It is great that MC Lyte is using her talent and voice to speak up on important issues in our community. It is even greater that she is also using her star power to financially support a few young men who want to further their education. "Dear John" serves as the official anthem for a scholarship initiative for young men of color that is supported by MC Lyte's Hip Hop Sisters Network. The #EducateOURMen initiative will award dozens of academic scholarships to young men of color who will pursue an education at historically Black colleges and universities.

You can catch Lyte and her new song on the upcoming episode of Being, which will air this Saturday, September 13th on Centric at 9 pm ET/8 pm CT. Immediately after the episode, MC Lyte will participate in an online discussion with fans. To view or participate in the livestream, you can register at MC Lyte's website.
