Lauryn Hill Takes An In-Depth Look At 'Consumerism'

Lauryn Hill is once again a free woman. And if you thought that her time in the clink would once again silence her musical output, you thought wrong. She comes back with her latest single "Consumerism." Just as with "Neurotic Society," Ms. Hill takes our corrupt society to task with the same breakneck flow she delivered on that track. Given the state of the country (and world) at the moment, "Consumerism" and its breakdown of all the 'isms that are causing society's ills is definitely a timely message. However, her delivery once again muddles it. The soundscape is eerie and chaotic (with a sample during what I assume is the chorus repeating "self destruct" over and over) and her near breathless flow adds to the cacophony. If perhaps she slowed things a bit and allowed the listener to fully digest the message, it might be better received. The fire of Lauryn's L-Boogie days is there, but the care and attention that she put into delivering thoughtful, insightful lyrics and commentary on albums like The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill and even MTV Unplugged 2.0 seems to be tossed aside for the sake of giving it to us raw and uncut. Judging from the comments on the last track, this approach might win over some, but it definitely just lost one.
