Mayer Hawthorne Goes Back In 'Time' To Detroit

Mayer Hawthorne dug deep in the VHS crates for vintage footage of Detroit staple The New Dance Show for his video for the song "A Long Time." Although I'm not from the D and was not privy to watching this bootleg version of Soul Train when it first aired in the late-'80s to mid-'90s, my best friend hails from there and told me all about that show and its predecessor The Scene, which were all the rage when she was growing up. Thanks to the magic of YouTube, I familiarized myself with both shows via the wildest, most comical dance show footage I had ever seen in my life. It seems as if those old clips also struck a chord with the director of "A Long Time" who took segments from various shows and pieced them together for this hilarious video hosted by R.J. Watkins. Watch as dancers wiggle, shake, pop, lock, and make their booty's bounce -- and that's just the dudes. The funniest part of all is that Mayer's song doesn't match the dancing that's occurring at all, but you'll be engrossed nonetheless. And keep watching til the end for the bonus local throwback commercial for even more humor.
