Kimbra Is Certainly Not 'Plain'
So Kimbra probably doesn't fall under the genre of "soul" for those who like their music packaged into neat little boxes. However, for those with more eclectic/diverse tastes, this Kiwi songstress may be worth checking out. I stumbled across her on New Zealand's excellent Amplifier website, my one-stop shop for Kiwi soul music, and I was intrigued, especially by her cover of Nina Simone's "Plain Gold Ring." I originally had her pegged as another quirky pop singer, but as I began to dig through her YouTube videos I couldn't deny that she had a little something in her voice, which, to my ears at least, was a little bit soulful with a hint or two of jazz. Kimbra is currently gearing up for the release of her debut album Vows, which drops in Australia/NZ at the end of this month. No word on when/if we will see a US/UK release, but you can check out her live rendition of "Plain Gold Ring" below, and the original song "Cameo Lover" after the bounce.
