Common & Nas Tell Us Their 'Ghetto Dreams'

While you were busy hitting up BBQs and picnics over the long weekend, Nas was busy spreading joy via his Twitter page to hip-hop heads across the world by leaking the full version of "Ghetto Dreams," the first single from Common's upcoming album, The Dreamer, The Believer. When a snippet debuted on Amazon back in May, the internet was all aflutter about this seemingly unlikely pairing. Produced by Lonnie Lynn's longtime collaborator No I.D., the song instantly transports me back to the early '90s, when both men released their debut albums, Common's Can I Borrow a Dollar and Nas's epic Illmatic. If you thought the years had taken the edge of either emcees' flow, then you clearly thought wrong as the duo shaves 20 years off, reclaiming the urgent, raw flow of their youth. The throwback shot of the two on the single cover is a perfect fit for the song. A far cry from the smoothed-out ladies man image Common has taken on in recent years thanks to more soulful hits like "The Light" and "Come Close," this song is 100% pure unadulterated hip hop. Not for the faint at heart, "Ghetto Dreams" has successfully grabbed my attention. Check it out and let me know if this Com and Nas collabo does the same for you. And while you're at it, maybe you can tell me what song is sampled in it. I've been racking my brain on it all day!
