Solange Makes It RAIN For A Good Cause
Solange Knowles continues to set herself apart from her far more famous sibling, Beyoncé. While she admittedly lacks the massive (and overzealous) pipes of her older sister, she makes some damn good music, all while marching to the beat of her own drum and playing by her own set of rules. Though she's been busying herself with parenthood, the occasional DJ gig, and working on the follow-up to 2008's Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams, she recently hit the recording booth for a worthy cause. She's joined forces with alt sensations Twin Shadow and Grizzly Bear's Chris Taylor and the Coca-Cola Foundation's Replenish Africa Initiative (RAIN) to help generate awareness of the Africa's clean water crisis. Proceeds from her latest song, "Kenya," which is available for download at the Music For RAIN website, will go towards tackling the issue of clean water access in countries such as Rwanda, Uganda, Cameroon, and others. Now I'll be the first to admit that I'm not normally a fan of message music (I'm a nice person on the inside, I promise). Even though the intent is good, they usually always come across as cheesy and contrived to me. However, this vid manages to get the message out there without sounding preachy or over-produced. Solange softly croons over the understated African-inspired arrangement. Be sure to check out the video below and the behind-the-scenes making of video after the bounce, then head over to Music For RAIN to help make a difference.
