DJ Premier, KRS-One & Grand Puba Give Their '5%'
Revoke my hip hop card or my hood pass or whatever you want to call it, but I'm not sure how much I'm loving this new track "5%" by DJ Premier featuring KRS-One and Grand Puba. The song seems like it should work well in theory. Grimy beat? Check. KRS-One? Double check. Grand Puba? Triple check. For some reason, KRS sounds lethargic and, while Puba sounds great, his flow sounds better than KRS' and hence should have been given more time to rhyme on this track. Now, I'm not saying that KRS has fallen off or sounds old or anything like that. In fact, he sounded great here not too long ago. But I can't help but feeling like something is missing. This track's positive message is certainly not lost on me since cocaine and booty raps are not as sustaining as they once were but something about this track just isn't there in my opinion. Take a listen and leave your thoughts in the comments. [H/T:RL]
