Mary J. Blige Cuts Ribbon On Foundation Building, Shows Ongoing Support For Women

If you are like me and your hope for more woman-positivity in pop music and culture is virtually non-existent then this story is one for you. Yesterday, Mary J. Blige opened the doors on the Foundation For the Advancement of Women Now (FFAWN). Located in Yonkers, New York, the foundation is "dedicated to helping all women gain the confidence and skills they need to reach their full individual potential," according to the website.

One of the most visible and strongest survivors in the music industry, Blige's commitment to advocating on behalf of women is inspiring. This is especially true in an industry where complicity in the degradation of and violence against women is disgustingly the norm.

If only more media would pick up on these positive developments, instead of constantly quoting anti-woman cowards like Chris Brown and R. Kelly or their apologists like Timbaland, Teyana Taylor, Swizz Beats, and Keri Hilson (and many more who are silent). Maybe then we could test out the crazy hypothesis that you don't have to actively or passively hate women in order to make money and be successful in the music industry.

Congratulations to Mary and all those involved in FFAWN. And deepest thanks to the many people both famous and unknown who support women across the globe. Your efforts are needed, noticed and appreciated. [CNN]
