A Soulful Noise

Why The Norfolk State University Marching Band Is All 'That'

Let me put this out there: I love HBCUs (if you don't know what those are, please...educate yourself right now). And there's nothing more entertaining than the marching bands that showcase some of young America's best and brightest musicians. While on different campuses over the years, I've witnessed them rock out to everything from Beethoven to Blackstreet. Imagine my delight when I came across a clip this week of the Norfolk State University marching band getting busy with Lalah Hathaway's "That Was Then." I did a double take, and then couldn't stop smiling. I want to shake that music director's hand. Right after I press play one more time. Dopeness.

This was real good. I mean really really good.

OMG!! OMG!! OMG!!! Behold the Green and Gold!!!! I graduated from NSU in 2007 with a degree in print journalism!!! The band is SERIOUS on campus. They practice all day and all night and it shows!!! We went to the games JUST FOR THE BAND!!! I'm proud of my school and band!!! Soulbounce ROCKS for this post!!! Made my night!!!!

Luvs it!

I love this. I miss being in my band. The music ws wonderful.

Im pretty sure Paul I. Adams, created this master piece, he is the assistant band director. NSU has always been a good ROUND sound band...Playing the oldies and the lastest sounds.I marched with them for 4 years, and loved every bit of it. GO NSU....I Love it...I Love it...I Love it.

This is on the one!!! I love it and I am sure Lalah loves it as well!!!

Kudos to the MD for showing these kids what real music is. They sound great. And this just happens to be one of my fave songs off the album.

because I went to VSU, I have to say boo NSU! LOL. ok now that I got that out of the way, I dig it! I do like Spartan Legion, and especially enjoy when HBCU bands play more than current radio hits....

Real musicianship!

Brilliant.

I wish my band director in middle school and HS had an ounce of this band directors ambition.
