Soulive's Version Isn't The 'Prototype' But It's Just As Good
![]()
Despite being a fan of Soulive's music for as long as I can remember, their July 7th release of Up Here made not one blip on my radar. That is, until I heard their cover of Andre 3000's "Prototype." Personally, I listened to "Prototype" a million billion times until being able to move to the next song when The Love Below dropped. At the time I thought it was one of the greatest alternative love songs I had ever heard. Listening to Soulive's version sung by Nigel Hall, I find myself falling in love with this song all over again. If there was ever a reason to buy an album based upon one track, this may be it.

I have never been a fan of contemporary remakes. It always seems to soon to remake a just minted classic but I have to give Nigel Hall a pass on this one. He has the chops to tackle this song and nail it! When I first heard it, honestly I thought that Andre 3000 had did a cover of it until I researched Nigel Hall and found out DAMN he's the one doing the cover. WOW this was great I love to hear soooouuuullll singers although I love Andre 3000 and his creativity he is not a soul singer (sorry) when I heard the first version I remember being on my way to work thinking 'I wish he had let Sleepy Brown or Cee LO do the lyrics' because he is a marginal singer with some really balls'ee songs. So to hear this one with the horns and actual instraments I was like damn. I have to get the rest of the LP (sorry I thought I heard crackling of the album on this one) CD.

I need to check out this album again. I hear they kill live. Need to catch them next time they come around.
