Melanie Fiona's 'Heartless' Is The Hotness
It's no secret that we are diggin' hard on Melanie Fiona around these parts. I have yet to hear one bad song or performance from this woman (how many mainstream artists can you say that about?) and can't wait for her album to drop on August 18th. Til then, we have her mixtape to tide us over, and here is a video taken from those recording sessions. This isn't the first time that Melanie has covered Kanye's "Heartless," which she frequently sang on tour, but this is the first time that we get to hear what she cooked up with Questlove in the studio with the Illadelphonics. If her reggae-tinged take on this track is any indication, then The Bridge Remixed Live is going to be hot like fire.

I've heard The Bridge, it definitely grows on you quickly...well many of the tracks do...kinda like Daniel Merriweather (wink wink)...
There are some Martha and the Vandals sounding tracks, like: Give it To Me Right, Please Don't Go (cry baby) and You Stop My Heart is probably the best of that group...vocals..umm
"Johnny" is sort of an upbeat fusion
"Sad Songs" banging roots reggae love/break-up song. "Priceless" is a creatively crafted pop/r&b love song. "It Kills Me" is a straight up and down R&B tune, that sounds like it could've been made by country-mate Tamia. "Teach Me" is a Spanish Guitar heavy wider-exsposure type of joint that sounds similar to the foray Mrs. Braxton took into that genre.
Then there are straight up give the Label a hard-on pop tunes, that I am afraid will be picked up and linger on the Norweigian Top 10 charts for weeks: Bang Bang-video shoot in leather?, Monday Morning- sounds like an Ah-Ha tune...Swedish pop.
Ay Yo-is a nice hip tune that includes pleasant instrumentation. She also has some 70's soul inspired tracks like Walk on By. There really i something for everyone on it. These songs set her up nicely for a world tour in about 18 months of leakage.
So if you like this Heartless take, you'll love Sad Songs. But frankly, knowing the fickleness of some of our people it could take a while to sink in...some people GET IT right away...Lions Tigers and Bears anyone? Seriously how long did that take to get airplay? Meanwhile we're force-fed Chasing Pavement @ 8am erry morning on VH-1.
