'M3: MC's, Mics & Metaphors' Gives Visual Insight Into the Master of Ceremonies
Hip Hop has always been a blend of different disciplines. It is a culture rooted in music but elaborated in a variety of ways, including the visual. And arguably the most visible figure in Hip Hop is the MC. In the upcoming art exhibition M3: MCs, Mics & Metaphor at DC's Gallery at Flashpoint, curator and artist Tewodross Melchishua has asked a group of artists to create work in a variety of media under the thematic umbrella of the MC.
In response, the artists have used emcees like Phonte and Big Pooh of Little Brother (Derrick (Benetez) Bryant) and songs like Common's "I Used To Love H.E.R" (Ann (Sole Sister) Johnson)
as inspiration. If you're in the DC area you should check it out. The
show opens tonight and will be on view until August 29th. Check out the

Unfortunately, when an art opening is billed as "hip-hop inspired," there has, recently, been a trend of the show not living up to the hype. And this was the case on Thursday, when a packed-liked-sardines crowd of hiphop lovers, artists, djs, etc congregated @ Flashpoint. Unfortunate that such hype only ended up delivering mediocirty in the artwork. No offense to the artists, but a "tribute to" or "inspired by" hiphop show needs to have at least better showcasing than album cover artworks. *shrugs*
Just my 2 cents.
PS: on the bright side, there are a couple of pretty outstanding works that are very much worth a peek.
