A Good 'Look' For Whitney
![]()
So we've already reconciled ourselves that Whitney Houston's new album has the Akon stamp of wackness on it. But don't despair, folks. There is a glimmer of hope to be had on I Look To You, and would you believe that we have R. Kelly to thank for it? That's right, Chester is back to penning inspirational-lite tunes, and he's done right by our girl with the title track. On "I Look To You" Whit digs deep and sings to her higher power to give her the strength to carry on. Is it Whitney's best song ever? No, but it is a very listenable and likable track for all those dying for the diva of old. For everyone who loves this track, Arista is giving it away for free download over the next week. Find out how to cop it after the bounce. And speaking of Arista, they've moved the release date of I Look To You up by one day to August 31st in order for it to be eligible for the 2010 Grammy Award nominations. Well played.

pitch correction was used on the entire song, not just certain notes. i've used the technology several times and know it when i hear it.

Nonplussed | July 29, 2009 5:00 AM | PermalinkSo the choice is emphysemic tourettes bark
or grating adenoidal yodelling.
I think I prefer the bark.
As for the strategic release date for the Grammys,
the arrogance and self-delusion are breathtaking.
I really wish I could be responding positively, she was astonishing, but I think they're owed an honest opinion because they want my money but they're really not delivering on the illusion they're selling.
The voice just isn't what it was, she's a bit lacklustre in parts, it'll chart but it's not a number one. And why did the backing vocals come in so late? She's beginning to sound like Patti Labelle, not that it's a bad thing but she could have been another Aretha if not for the drugs. However Mary J Blige will take that honour in my book. I wish Whitney well and pray that she keeps off the drugs or has Uncle Clive done a good coverup job like he did when she first started.
iglad | July 28, 2009 7:59 PM | PermalinkI could actually tell that it was an R Kelly written track. That little "You-oooh-ooh" that Whitney hits, that's an R Kelly trademark that he does in his own sweeping productions.
Soulrific | July 28, 2009 5:30 PM | PermalinkMonk your not paranoid at all, its good that people are begging to call "singers" out on pitch correction. I say why? When she did just fine without it in the 80's and 90's...
Caps are "corrected notes"
At 0:41, "after all that I've been THROUGH",
at 0:47 "I look to YOU"
at 1:19, "When melodies are GONE"
at 1:41 "There no more FIGHTING left" ,
2:04 "And I don't know if i', GONE make it"
2:12 "I look to YOU"
2:50 "I look to YOU"
2:50 all of the background vocals, underneath hear lead are tightly tuned and artificially "tightened" or time stretched to ensure they are aligned.
Mutada al sader the king | July 28, 2009 5:10 PM | PermalinkIs it just me and my paranoia .......but.....did they sneak auto tune on the second verse and bridge?
the song is ok but it ends with a wimper. Not that it should be a Grande EX--TRAVAGAAAANZA!! but it just peters out.
Like every whitney post i make I'll end with the heartfelt and honest "fingers crossed".
hoodedmonk | July 28, 2009 4:50 PM | PermalinkI'm a Whitney fan from way, way back, but I admit...the first thing I thought when I heard this track: "damn, I bet Jennifer Hudson would murder this song."
natthedem | July 28, 2009 4:28 PM | PermalinkRKelly is talented musician (his personal life has nothing to do with me even though, ehhhh I wish he wasn't like what people say he is).He can write hell of a inspirational song to a "can I make that ___ cry" lol.But as for Whitney.I don't know if I really like the song to much, her voice just doesn't do it for me anymore. She should of got Babyface though because listening to "Why Does It Hurt So Bad" compared to this..I pass.
TLD | July 28, 2009 3:52 PM | PermalinkSo how many Grammy's will Clive Davis get Whitney in 2010?
chynadoll | July 28, 2009 3:44 PM | PermalinkThe pervert has always been a beast.. I'm still a fan.
Voice is still not were it was before, but much better than the contrived Foster/Warren confection posted a week or so ago.
Speaking of David, they should have had "Mr. Elevator Music" produce and arrange this one. The production is a bit lack luster, (drums are weak, transitions are uneventful, Bridge is weak). Tricky and them should stick to the Timbaland rip off tracks. Better though.
