Since last week, AOL's The Boombox blog has been hosting the "Countdown to BLACKsummers'night" listening party, presenting a song a day from Maxwell's nine-track comeback album. For those who have yet to hear BLACK in its entirety (yes, the album has already leaked), this has been something to look forward to daily like a kiss from a loved one. If you haven't succumbed to the temptation of downloading, then AOL will be streaming the whole disc online starting on Friday for your listening pleasure. I listened to this album 4 straight hours yesterday... absolutely love it. I used to just skip to the songs I LOVE: Bad Habits, Pretty Wings, Stop the World, Fistful of Tears.. But I love and appreciate every track on here. And it can ONLY get better at this point

I loved the Pretty Wings sniipet, then when the full song was released it took me a minute to get into the groove of it. Then Bad Habits just hit me like a ton of bricks. I LOVE that song! Then Cold, again it took me a minute, but I find myself singing it off and on during the day. So far my ABSOLUTE favorite is Stop the World.
The entire album is just a different sound from his previous albums. And if you go back and listen to each of the previous albums you will see that each one is somewhat different from the last. Maxwell is an artist, a creator and he creates what he feels, what he likes, what he has experienced. He is not about conforming to what everyone else out there is doing. He creates from the heart. And as he has said in every interview, EACH ALBUM OF BSN is a DIFFERENT type of music.
And there is nothing wrong with the falsetto, he still got it!

The three singles I have heard just seem to be focusing on a different tone and vibe, therefore invoking a different type of vocal. When I saw him live in the fall, he could absolutely hit all the high notes in his catalouge so I think he still has it...

BUT saw him live at Radio City and he had no problem hitting the high ones and staying there for the duration of songs. his vocals are DEFINITELY not deteriorating. if anything seeing him live made me realize that the albums dont even come CLOSE to doing him justice. . can i say again that i cant wait for 7july?
kaliber | June 25, 2009 12:05 PM | PermalinkAs a Maxwell fan, rather than a 'stan', I must say I think this album is up there with the best of '09 so far. Usually I prefer female singers (dunno why) with a bit of an alternative sound, however every track on the album is great.
Will it end the yar as a standout? Hard to tell as there are albums from Ledisi, Erro, N'Dambi, Sade and possibly Jill Scott (according to Essence interview).

He doesn't have the voice like he did back in the day, you listen to it enough you can hear him trying to reach that falsetto or higher notes sometimes and its just not happening.. not a bad thing, it happens to plenty of artists as they get older. I like it the most when I consider it a new fresh sound rather than trying to compare it to his old stuff. He set a really high bar years ago. I like it, but it is very different to me. I wonder how many fans of the falsetto will be disappointed tho.. I imagine if he gets poor reviews it'll mostly be in regards to that because the music, lyrics, and production are on point.

He's still giving us sexy, smooth (not smutty) lyrics, still delivering those grooves with a litte extra thrown in and his voice is still like buttah! I expect him to have nothing but success with this trilogy. ;-]

Im really interested in the different ways he seems to be using his voice on the 3 songs I have heard. I don't hear that gorgeous falsetto so much, more of a raspy less smooth sound. Still works-just different. I don't know what this entire offering will bring, but Ill pick it up. I cant imagine it could top Embrya, I just need it to be much better than Now. ;)
anon | June 24, 2009 10:58 PM | PermalinkThe songs that I've heard so far I really like. The cd isn't on the lines of UHS, EMBRYA, NOW so maybe that will disappoint some. I would say that Black is a little less intense than the ones that came before it, but nonetheless still amazing and beautiful and a MUST HAVE. In my opinion, it doesn't get any better than Maxwell and I appreciate and respect him!

For many years Maxwell has been underestimated in so many ways and with this CD he has definitely shown that he is a true artist and a true talent. I am sorry that there are those that can't or won't find the uniqueness in his music. I don't know if that is because he is not ur typical artist but u know what I am glad that he's not ur a typical artist, because that is what makes Max stand out from other artists!!!!!

I've only heard Pretty Wings, Bad Habits and Cold and I love what I've heard thus far.
I'm fighting the temptation to listen to the rest of songs that have been leaked because I want to listen to the cd in its entirety when it is released. Maxwell and his crew have never let me down and at this point, I just believe in what he/they create musicially. 7/7/09!!!!

This project of a "trilogy" is an amazing undertaking by a very capable artist. In any album there are songs that you love and songs that you like... songs that when you come back a year later ...you can't believe you wrote it off so quickly as a "hate". I was in love with Bad Habits from the tour, I liked Pretty Wings but since it has become a single I have grown pretty fond of it and after hearing more from the album Stop the World has surpassed them both and is competing with Love You... when I finally get a chance to play the whole album together I think that the bigger picture will be so rewarding for us as listeners ... and to think this is a part of three... in two years when I play them all back together... owwwweee ...

What I really love about him is that he is not afraid to take chances. He does not allow himself to fall into the trap of becoming "packaged". He creates as he sees fit. If you love creativity and appreciate plain and simple good music, then BLACK would be like a treasure chest of goodies just waiting to be unwrapped. With each song released, he gives a little taste of something different . I for one, think that's what a lot of artists are missing these days. If you are a fan of Maxwell's music, give it a chance. I'll bet you 10 to 1, it'll grow on you. And hey...don't leak the music, DANG! He deserves a chance to be One in a Million.

However, this time I will allow Maxwell to "stand and look pretty for me."
I'm disappointed. This album is so blah to me. Don't get me wrong. I love Maxwell's voice and the instrumentation is also but the songs are just mediocre to me. I hope he comes harder next time.
