It's Solange's 'Destiny' To Sing
Earlier this week AOL Black Voices put their latest installment of The Bridge music series online with Solange as the featured artist.
Solo and her band performed tracks from Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams, including "T.O.N.Y.," "Cosmic Journey," and "Sandcastle Disco." But my favorite performance of hers was when she covered Zero 7's "Destiny." Unlike the uneven job she previously did on Coldplay's "Viva La Vida," Solange sounds very good here and her band is killing it. Dare I say that I may even like her version more than the original. If you'd like to see more of Solange live, then be sure to can catch her on the road with Estelle now.

Tafari | March 2, 2009 1:09 PM | PermalinkAs others have said, it's strange to hear that fuzzy-yodel effect used on such a restrained performance but it complimented the song, wasn't too intrusive (or maybe hehey is right! Perhaps that's how she sings. Maybe she warms up with ringtones?)
Nonplussed | March 2, 2009 5:21 AM | PermalinkI liked that a lot.
I wouldn't go as far as saying I prefer Solange's version over Sia's, but it is a great cover nonetheless. Who knew Solange could invoke that rainy day chill mood sound without coming across all gimmicky & commercial? I sure as hell didn't. This genre maybe her niche for the next album. I'd love to hear her do some original work.
FireMadeFlesh | March 1, 2009 3:28 AM | Permalinki feel it was enough to mention the fact that "Destiny" is a Zero 7 track. this was not a Zero 7 or Sia post, it's about Solange. what was she supposed to do--put a Zero 7 biography right in the middle of this post? links are provided for a reason: so people can be reminded or discover new things on their own.
additionally, stating a personal preference could never be a travesty. the real travesty is when people are hated on for doing so.
dar | February 28, 2009 9:56 PM | PermalinkI love this site, cause honestly didnt knw of this song or zero7 until, i agree with the use of digital auto tune, but I went and listened to the original. Although I thought it was good. there's a quality i think solange added that I care for a little more! Much Respect!
sngstress | February 28, 2009 12:58 PM | PermalinkSB Reader & hey hey touch on this briefly, and by my drifting from the topic I don't mean this as any short-changing of Solange, but I see you pushing a her and she has made leaps and bounds but this is a Soul site and to mention Zero 7 without mentioning the person that put them on the map Sia Furler, Australian-born SOUL singer is a bit wack. She was giving people chills as early as 97, grinding doing it big. I would hope you could post this youtube version of distractions and let people be the judge:

Manamongst Hussein | February 28, 2009 12:39 PM | PermalinkFor you to even consider this better than the original is a travesty!!! stick to soul music, Sia Fuller is the real deal.
SBreader | February 28, 2009 11:44 AM | PermalinkI love Solange; however, I didn't like the digitized sound that others have mentioned. Without that, I probably would have loved it. Nikesha- I'm with you. I totally feel her over B cuz she doesn't try to do all commercial stuff like her big sis.
DLS77 | February 28, 2009 1:56 AM | PermalinkNice cover...I really enjoyed :-)
Trizonna | February 28, 2009 12:56 AM | PermalinkI am shocked that I really like this song! Love the CD, now I guess i can call myself a Solange fan!! Don't tell anybody just yet.
Sheree | February 27, 2009 11:23 PM | PermalinkWow. Funny I was just listening to Adele's Hometown Glory, or TRIED to, but it reminds me too much of a song by Sia, a lead singer for Zero7-- and wondered if any of the youngins remember that band. Guess so.
That said.... is that autotune? Or are girls who can legitimately sing trying to sound digitized? Heaven forbid.
heyhey | February 27, 2009 7:18 PM | PermalinkI loved it. i'm soo loving her more than her sister right now it's not even funny.
Nikesha | February 27, 2009 7:13 PM | Permalinkwhy can't she just sing why is there so much machinery involved?
tiredofnonsense | February 27, 2009 5:43 PM | PermalinkIs there something wrong with my computer?
