Battle of the Beats
Battle of the Beats Quadruple Header: Bad Boy vs. So So Def
We've been waiting to do this one for a long time. Today's Battle of the Beats presents you with two powerhouses that to this day inspire fierce debate. During most of the '90's Diddy's Bad Boy outfit and Jermaine Durpi's So So Def pretty much ruled the airwaves and worked with many of the same artists. Oftentimes, their camps would assist with each other's projects. There was always a mutual respect between the two and it amazingly never resulted in beef. So. just for kicks, we're battling tracks by Usher, Total, Mariah and Biggie that both sides had a hand in. Pick your winners after the bounce.
ROUND ONE: Usher "Think Of You"
Album Version
So So Def Remix
ROUND TWO: Total "Can't You See"

ROUND THREE: Mariah Carey "Honey"

So So Def Remix feat. JD & Da Brat
ROUND FOUR: The Notorious B.I.G.: "Big Poppa"

Bad Boy without a doubt. This was my first time hearing some of those SoSo Def remixes
Tosh | January 29, 2009 11:15 AM | Permalink@Naheem: Fantastic idea! I'm gonna dig thru the crates and see what I come up with. I think there might be a Timbo/JD battle on tap. Stay tuned.
nOvaMaticI think Soulbounce should do one of these every month, this was fun. I love the stuff they both did back in the day, however with these particular 4 tracks I have to give it to the Bad Boy Camp hands down.
Naheem | January 20, 2009 9:12 AM | PermalinkWithout a doubt during that era Bad Boy ran things. Round 1-3 Bad Boy win hands down. The Usher track the original was THE BOMB! Round 2 I didnt love either of them but I thought the Bad Boy beat was hotter. Round 3 Bad Boy killed that one, didnt care that much for Mase but I definitely think he fit on this track well. Round 4 is the only one I have to hand over to So So Def. That Biggie rmx was the Shit!!!! Even when I hear that track on the radio from time to time he takes me back down memory lane. As much as I don't care for Puffy these days back then no one could touch him!!!! Not to take anything away from So So Def because they also have a killer catalog from back then. But in this battle Bad Boy wins!!!
LadyLuckDC | January 17, 2009 6:06 PM | PermalinkPuff was the remix KING.....Bad Boy jointz was that KNOCK.....
Tiffani | January 17, 2009 2:52 PM | PermalinkBad Boy!!!! I did like that Big Poppa so so def remix though...forgot all about that joint.
Reecie | January 17, 2009 1:28 PM | PermalinkJD had the hotter Usher joint..it had the more memorable track to me (I remember bumping this young cat in '94). Diddy won the other three battles, which a close win with the Mariah jawn...which makes sense because she wasn't HIS artist (unlike Total and Biggie).
Say what you want now, but 90s-era Diddy ran things imperial.

Fave | January 17, 2009 1:19 AM | PermalinkDamn the Bad Boy versions won out! Except for Big Poppa, I like the So So Def remix better than the original.
hiphopmuse | January 16, 2009 10:40 PM | PermalinkI just saw the Notorious film, so of course i'm gonna ride with bad boy:-) at it's peak Bad boy was probably the best rap label of all time, bar none.
stoneyisland | January 16, 2009 8:15 PM | PermalinkUsher - Original no doubt
Total - Im feelin the SoSo remix more than Puff's
MAriah & Biggie - No question, Bad Boy 4 Life
(Ironic how neither of these dudes are RELEVANT in the music scene today like back then)
Lorin | January 16, 2009 6:08 PM | PermalinkPuff, most definitely... brings back a lot of memories. :-)
