A Soulful Noise

Maxwell Converses With LA Times, Feels Rejuvenated

maxwell_soul-patch.jpgTwo months ago, November meant two things to me: voting in this year's election and going to see Maxwell when he arrived in Los Angeles. Alas, Maxwell has come and gone due to my desire to want to keep a roof over my head and not have my car repossessed, but after reading a recent interview in the LA Times, I can honestly say I know a bit more about the man that what I knew before. For example, did you know that he did not take his first swig of alcohol until the age of 30? Or that his inspiration for his trio of upcoming albums, Black Summer's Night, is The Godfather and Lord of The Rings trilogies? Besides beating us over the head with how rejuvenated he now feels after taking 10 years off from making music and leaving us with his somewhat lackluster Now, Maxwell also reveals that his newest works represent his journey "into the dark and back into the light" after what else? A breakup.

He also discusses his thoughts on coming out with a live album after the second album in the three-disc series, which we can expect to be Gospel-inspired Dance music. In other words, House music all night long. And besides his afro, the legacy of the myth that is Musze wants to leave behind is being a man who helped to create lots of babies. And he also believes Chris Brown is an "incredible, enigmatic performer." Hey, to each his own. In the meantime, we'll be waiting, not with baited breath, for more baby-making music and lower ticket prices from Maxwell real soon.

A conversation with Maxwell: 'I didn't get to have a life for so long, so I went and lived one' [LAT]

Suspect..

Raheem did get the side eye for teaming up with that sicko bastard R.Kelly. However Raheem is just a talented singer in MY opinion, however he has a LONG way to go to become the performer that Maxwell is. I have never said Maxwell isnt talented, the brother probably makes my top 20 of all time. as for Dave yeah he went gospel but the chops remain the same and I dont know how I left out my main man Anthony Hamilton who is my favorite singer since Luther passed on. If I have a choice of buying Max's or Anthonys new CD, I buy Anthony's 10 outta 10 times. Thats all I am saying, I dont mean no harm:)

Hey Suga, whats good lady!! I appreciate the blog luvins!!! And yes that was THEEEEEE SEXIEST SHOW EVERRRRR. I definitely left their satisfied ;-) hahaha. Best believe im a check out your blog as soon as I'm done postin up pics and video on mine, from the John Legend concert tonight in SF, check it out if you have a moment, did u go to that one too? And stoneyisland, i'm a have to agree with suga, Jahiem and Dave Holllister aint got SH*T on Maxwell. hand down, panties off, Maxwell put it down, and his music is real lets get it on type stuff, no ghetto pilates on Maxwells agenda.... i talked to guys and girls after the show, and they ALL loved it. I think at this point, if d'angelo were to come back(in shape) he would for sure give Maxwell a run for his money, but until I see it for myself, I'm gonna keep maxwell on top, mmmhhhmmm

Hey Fiyah Lilly! I was at the Oakland show as well (blogged about it too)...the one last Wednesday. I must say, it was the sexiest concert I've ever been to and quite possibly the 2nd best concert overall (behind Ms. Jilly from Philly of course). Loved it. I hope my boo and I didnt accidentally make a baby that night...sheesh! He surely had us hot and bothered.

I want that man to stop TALKING about an album and actually RELEASE it

stony island, are you really putting JAHEIM and Dave Hollister (who also hasnt been giving us what we want because he now sings gospel) in the same category as Maxwell? I love me some Raheem, but i dont even think HE should be in the same category either...not after he collaborated with Kells on that Customer remix. You got my side eye ready to erupt with that statement.

But everybody is entitled to their opinion. lol

He takes off for ten years because of a breakup?!? his boyfriend must be devestated:) I dont get why artist who have all the talent in the world (D'angelo, Maxwell etc) think that fans are gonna wait around for them to release music. While he was out living his life (which he has all the rights in the world to do) young cats like Raheem Devaughn have filled their spots, will I buy Maxwells new joint? damn right I will. If he never puts out another CD will I lose sleep over it? hell no I wont. He just better hope his album doesnt drop on the same day as say Raheem, Jaheim or Dave hollister, because if it does I'm probably gonna drop my 15 bones on someone else.

Like everyone posting - thank you so much for this article. Wow. He just takes my breath away with his candor and insight.

Still can't breathe. He makes my teeth hurt!

Thanks for the fix, i mean post. I love this man!

I saw Maxwell for the first time in Chicago last month and I can honestly say...it was worth every cent. He gave us all he had and I absorbed every bit of him.

Even though we missed him and his music terribly, Maxwell has my respect and admiration for realizing that he needed time off...and he took it. He didn't keep pushing himself and have a public breakdown a la Britney Spears/Mariah Carey. (and maybe Beyonce if she doesn't get somewhere and sit down)

Nor did he put out a CD every year and make us sick of him(although I doubt I could ever get sick of Max). The list I could make of artist/singers that I WISH would go away for 7 to 10 years.

Chris Brown...enigmatic? Word? I'd say he's an enthusiastic performer, but mysterious? Hmmm.... Still I love this man. LOVE.

I love maxwell, but after his concert in Oakland and seeing hiim up close and personal at the after party here in San Francisco, i am now IN LOVE. He put on the best live show I have every been to, and I have been to hundreds in my liifetime. I am so glad Maxwell is back, and who ever he was in a relationship last is FOOL to not be with him, but then again thank you to her bcuz he probably wouldve not come back and blessed us with his beauty and talent.
i I have pictures & live recordings from the Oakland show on my blog & youtube channel feel free to check'm out.

that was a pretty good interview..gosh i luv his new look sooooo much!

that was a fantastic interview, and a great post. i was fortunate (no pun intended) enough to catch Maxwell this time around, and it was one of the best shows i've seen. there was absolutely nothing left for him to do once the encore was over--it was amazing. Maxwell has always been kind of mysterious, and he seems to be stripping some of that away now. we're discovering that he's just a real dude. i admire him for his ability to remain balanced in his humanness even more so than his high level of talent.

Thanks! I needed my fix:) Love that man....
